What if you could feel happier, sleep better and look slimmer? The supplement 5-HTP (5- Hydroxytryptophan) may be able to help!
This is a chemical made in your body from protein. It’s converted into the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin, which in turn is transformed into the sleep hormone melatonin.
5-HTP is found in food, but is made in your body from the amino tryptophan, which is rich in foods including fish, turkey, chicken, cheese, beans, tofu, oats and eggs. The conversion process requires B vitamins, vitamin C and zinc, so these nutrients are vital for ensuring you can make adequate serotonin. Exposure to sunlight and exercise can also boost levels.
Taking a supplement of 5-HTP, which is derived from the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia Simplicifolia, for a few months can help to correct the deficiency. There is no official recommended dose allowance for 5-HTP, but supplementing 50mg up to three times a day can help to correct an imbalance.
The only potential side effect is that it can cause nausea-if this occurs, reduce the dose and build up more slowly. 5-HTP can ease depression, anxiety and insomnia. It can also aid weight loss and help with migraines.
