What are the benefits of a spa day?

Spa days are seen by some an unnecessary luxury or as something you’d reserve for a ‘special occasion’. But the reality is there are some real, proven benefits to a spa day that could help everyone!

A number of studies have shown that they do good things for you, beyond what you can physically see and feel. Spa days can significantly improve your mood and have a positive effect on mental health. They can leave you glowing in the days and weeks to follow. Here are the top benefits we see:

RELAXATION

We know it’s not always easy to fit in time in a hectic schedule to unwind, but it’s worth it! Relaxation is incredibly important to help your body get rid of toxins. Plus, stress can lead to unnecessary water retention and loss of energy leaving you feeling lethargic. As well as giving you a feeling of ultimate relaxation, spa days can contribute to improved circulation, pain reduction, tension release and better quality sleep.

HAPPINESS

Massage, as well as alleviating those niggling aches and knots, can also contribute to a sense of happiness and mental wellbeing. Massage, by boosting circulation, aids the work of the lymphatic system by flushing out any excess build up of fluids. Studies have shown that massage releases serotonin, a hormone in the brain that creates a fantastic ‘happy feeling’ and controls the mood balance of the mind. Getting a massage on your spa day is a perfect way to completely relax the body and unwind. Massage is a natural and soothing (not to mention enjoyable!) way to rebalance these serotonin levels and keep mental illness at bay without the use of medication.

IMMUNE SYSTEM

Studies have shown massage to strengthen the immune system, leaving you feeling better for longer. In one particular study conducted in the US, 29 subjects received 45 minutes of Swedish massage and 24 others were given a light touch massage. Blood samples were taken before and after, the results showing significant changes in the chemicals in their blood. Most notably, the Swedish massage group showed an increase in lymphocytes (white blood cells) and a decrease in AVP, a hormone linked to causing aggressive behaviour.

SLEEP

Been suffering from insomnia? You’re not alone! Insomnia affects 1 in 3 people worldwide. Lack of sleep can lead to feelings of desperation, anxiety and depression. Spa days are a perfect way to escape from the stresses of everyday life and stop you counting sheep! Stimulation of the muscles through facials and massages can locate and ease tensions within the body leaving you feeling tranquil and primed for a great nights sleep. Escaping to the spa for a day or two and leaving your daily routine behind will help you psychologically to switch off, and will have you dreaming in no time!
